Jamil Welch, 21, of Orange, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child in the death of Laniyah Bloodworth, also of Orange, on Dec. 30, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stevens II and Orange Police Director Todd Warren said in a joint release.
Officers were called to a home on the 200 block of Wallace Street on a report of an unresponsive child, authorities said.
First responders transported the young girl to University Hospital in Newark where she was pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m. Dec. 30, Stevens and Warren said.
The cause and manner of the girl's death are pending, however, investigators noted that she had unexplained bruising on her body.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
